is it possible to re activate the carbon in your filter

Postby psycoticgardener » Thu Apr 24, 2014 10:08 pm

i know you can buy activated carbon pellets to refill your filter... Is it possible to clean the used carbon to use again. I was thinking a good soak in hot caustic soda may do the job which would be hany as i have access to a heated tank full of it. Any ideas?

Pg, Hi; Have you dunked it in the 'Pine Door Stripping Bath" yet ?/............. if so what happened ?/.......

Not sure, but if the costic sada Ph14+ !! will disolve the carbon, or react to give of gas ?

Most carbon filters you cannot reload them. many use the ausi carbon or mongolian cintered chards. As a rule you would use Na+ sodium, on 3mm pellet type, but will only clean 20-30% of VOC volatile organic compounds (terpens) etc..........

Finding the 2 & 3mm cintered pelleted carbon is a problem. After hours of searching found a guy that imports direct from Ausi. So it is a fair price at 3 quid a kilo !! for 3mm. @Coastal Koi........ dont tell em all though !!

I make my own re fill-able pre filters and end filters thus;

get a 125mm to 100mm metal duct collar and end cap.
this forms the outer layer cover the two ends with 15mm anodized chicken wire
to form the outer sleeve.

Attach inside to the 125mm end cap. a 100mm cylinder (length to suit needs) made from 2no 100mm end caps covered in 15mm chicken wire.
Cover the inner with 2 layers of black cloth tights and fix in place using 3mm zip ties every 60mm.

Once glued to inside of 125mm end cap, assemble the outer 125mm cylinder with the 100mm inside. And cover outer with same black cloth tights and secure with zips every 60mm on outside. before you fix in the 125mm to 100mm end, fill the iside with dust free carbon, a 60cm filter will use around 4kg of 3mm carbon.

When you need to change carbon take of 125 to 100mm reducer tip out and refill......... essentially a cylinder inside a cylinder, the air is pulled though the outer, through the carbon to the inside of 100mm inner void and away etc..... Hope this helps, they are less than half the pheat price once built..... AB

A couple of links to get the idea; of the inner and outer arrangements................. you just have to make shure the carbon is dust free and settled in close so small void area etc......... easy to replace carbon. keep flow as low as pos, by making a 4 branched manifold with 4 carbon cans on each outlet etc........ps; test before permanant installation etc, to check no odour at your specific air flow rate etc......... AB

Addendum; keep RH below 65% with this 3mm cintered carbon.....AB
